I dont remember when I gave up the dream

when i was a kid I wanted to be an Astronaut or a Garbage Man. I think I could have become the very best one ever, in either case.

Oddly enough, I wanted to be a marine biologist from the time I was five until I realized that I'd have to go to college in Duluth, MN. (It never occurred to me that I could possibly leave the Midwest for some reason.) It's cold in Duluth. Very cold.

I have a degree in history. You don't have to go anywhere cold to get a degree in history. But you don't get to do much diving, either.

hey, I wanted to be an astronaut too! Two things got in my way: I really suck at math and I don't like Tang.

You know, you're right. You probably could have made being a Garbage Man cool.

you know what it was?

it was ALL about holding onto the back of that truck as it cruised up and down the streets and never having to wear a helmet or a seat belt. You just stood on that strip of diamond plate and hung out the side of the truck.

Work Gloves, T-Shirts and hair.

When the thing stopped, you loaded a bunch of stuff into that big metal mouth and got to crush the shit out of it.

Nobody would have done it like me.

I wanted (and still want) to be that guy with the "stop/go" sign who directs traffic when construction reduces the flow to just one lane, for both directions. I just know I'd be good at it.
