Three Word Love Song

I went to a wedding and a funeral this weekend and saw first how I’ve done a shitty job at keeping in touch with loved ones.

The wedding was for an old friend. I am old enough to have old friends now. People that knew you two versions ago. People you don’t have to lie to or impress because they have seen you long before the bullshit and for some reason they still like you. That was really sweet for me, and I just kept being baffled at what keeps people apart.

The funeral was for an Uncle. Cousins I haven’t seen forever, suddenly have long hair or no hair or kids with long hair. Some young 15 year old with tremendous lank, looked past me, but I knew who he was because of the plaid tie he was wearing and the geek-neck of his father. How could this boy have grown to my height? I think I saw him last as a toddler.

The church was several hundred years old and has it’s yard filled with Ancient stones of the dead before us. If you don’t have a bag-piper in the family you should consider getting one. My brother stood in the yard after the service and played 4 or 5 songs under the tree the ashes are to be scattered. Aunts and Uncles stood in the cold at a respectful distance and listened.

In the hall next door there were sandwiches and tears. Stories and laughs. The kids chased each other and we balanced empty plates and paper coffee cups.

There were photos of the cousins when we were kids, there were pictures from the war, pictures of some young Navy Cook. We hear about his death and how fast it was. Yes, Yes, that’s how he wanted to go. It was for the better. His last words to my Aunt tell me the whole story, start to finish.

Bret Favre Retires, Gary Gygax Dies

Today sucks for the Geeks and the Jocks.

welcome

Do you ever wonder about that little bit of dirt at the bottom of a stalk of Celery? I do. I’m not worried about the food being dirty, I more curious how much top-soil is lost in a field each year to Celery Leeching.

So I’m in the little office lunch room running my Celery under the sink, rubbing the dirt off and trying to devise a way to re-capture all of the earth residue back at the packaging plant or field-side.

There are other people milling about this lunch-room but I have my headphones on so that they wont talk to me. The headphones are not even connected to anything. Sometimes I’ll even talk really loudly to really sell it so that everyone thinks I’m listening to music. It’s an illness.

Somebody’s fucking with the microwave.

Somebody’s getting water.

The new woman walks into the lunchroom and apologetically makes her way to the coffee machine. “I cant seem to get enough coffee today” she breaks to nobody as the coffee flows.

“You’re not trying hard enough” I deadpan from my celery without looking up.

She laughs awkwardly and there’s a weird moment because I don’t laugh or aknowledge her. She leaves.

The guy at the Microwave cracks up.

I’m such a dick sometimes.

not just another monday (American Sonnet)

somebody says 'the baby passed'
and you don't have to know them
to have your stomach seize up
it's unfair

it's so unfair

to have a week of hope
and a lifetime of despair

it's hard for me to hear that
to know that could have been us
the details were the same
the end result, so very different

i wonder how they will move on

why me?
well, why not you?

then a lifetime (American Sonnet)

until I saw your face
I had completely forgotten the time we went through
the same thing

almost.

hollow, clenched days trying to work and pretend

nights in a blue vinyl chair
in a green tiled room, still pretending

waiting for the end of what you know life to be

it's funny how fast things can change in an unfunny way
we were given minutes to prepare, then hours, then days, then weeks

you'd settle for miserable any-things and be GRATEFUL
given the alternative

I didn't anticipate or deserve

In Defense of Food

I am currently reading a book by Michael Pollan called "In Defense of Food".  You may know him for writing a book called "The Omnivore's Dilemma".  This book is the right information at the right time for me.  I've been wanting to blog about this book on a daily basis, but I'm waiting a little to fully digest the information.  It's not that it's hard to understand, it's just that I am an extremely slow adapter when it comes to my lifestyle and habits.  I don't like change, and I need overwhelming evidence to make incremental moves.

Mostly this book makes me want to draw diagrams.  It doesn't have any graphics and whenever I want to retell one of the points I want to show it in an illustration.  I think I will need to write about this book in several short articles, and I will need to draw pictures.  Yes, yes.

My own theory about food & life is this:
Eat Less, Exercise More

But I am really being sold on Michael Pollan's seven words:
Eat Food, Not Too Much, Mostly Plants

It's NOT a vegetarian book, but analyzes 'The Western Diet' how it came about over the last 100 years, why Science keeps screwing up our diet further, and more!

Much more to come…and diagrams!

Frank Lloyd Wright of the Fork and Spoon

ok
have a beer and catch up with me

So for Valentines Day my wife and I waited till sat night to go out, so we could have some time and enjoy ourselves.

Fortunately, our very favorite place is cheap and fun and SOOOOOO good. It's sort of like having dinner at your best friends house, assuming he was the best Italian chef ever that chose the meal according to what was available that morning at the Italian Market.

So apparently I've been drinkng and my wife asked me what a friends house looked like.

As dinner was cleared, I gathered every soon fork and clam fork available and built a floorplan using those on our 2 top.

Now I've been reading architectural drawings and elevations for 10 years so for me to express myself with silverware seemed pretty acceptable to me.

to my wife and waitress and everyone else present I'm sorry if it didnt make sense to you. It was good. I'm pretty sure.

a cold winter night

Last night I lay in bed a long time thinking about my life. My wife was asleep peacfully and various animals (and not kids for once) were tucked into the folds of our bedding, sharing the heat. Without much awareness I farted in the puppy's face and she burst into a two minute sneezing fit.

Knowing that today she learned a lifelong lesson today, I was satisfied enough to drift off to sleep.

My oldest son, C@leb, is the most committed to the sport. He runs and works out specifically to be better at wrestling. He intends to wrestle in High School next year, and occassionally gets called up to practice with the High School despite that he is only in 8th Grade.

It's really fun for me to talk with him about the sport, as he puts alot of thought into what moves he should be perfecting in practice, and which coaches should he be getting training from.

C@leb prefers tougher opponents and loves to be tested under pressure, and hopes to go to Nationals this year!
